How to Know When Your Child Needs Extra Academic Support

The everyday signs worth noticing, and what to do before small gaps grow.

Most children struggle with something at school at some point. A hard week is normal. What matters is a pattern that lasts, and the earlier you notice it, the easier it is to help.

Signs worth paying attention to

  • Homework takes much longer than it should, or ends in frustration most nights.
  • Grades slip in one subject while others stay steady.
  • Your child avoids a subject, or says they are "just bad at it".
  • Teachers mention gaps from earlier years, such as times tables or reading fluency.
  • Confidence drops, and your child stops asking questions in class.

What you can do first

Talk with your child about which part feels hard, and ask the teacher what they see. Often the problem is one missing building block, such as fractions or decoding longer words, that later lessons depend on.

If the pattern continues for more than a few weeks, steady one on one support can help. A good tutor starts by finding exactly where understanding stops, then rebuilds from there, at a pace that suits your child.
