How to Encourage Better Reading Habits at Home

Make reading a part of the day your child looks forward to.

Children who read for pleasure tend to read more, and reading more is one of the best ways to improve. The goal at home is to make reading feel enjoyable, not like extra homework.

Ideas that help

  • Let your child choose. Comics, sports books and graphic novels all count.
  • Read together, even with older children. Take turns reading pages aloud.
  • Keep books within reach, in the car, by the bed, and in the living room.
  • Ask open questions such as "What do you think happens next?" rather than quizzing.
  • Set a short, regular reading time, and read your own book alongside them.

When reading is hard

If your child avoids reading, guesses at words, or struggles to explain what they read, they may need help with phonics, fluency or comprehension. Focused practice with a tutor can make a real difference, especially when it starts early.
