Helping Middle School Students Develop Study Routines

More subjects and more homework call for a simple, steady system.

Middle school brings more teachers, more assignments and more responsibility. Many students find it hard not because the work is too difficult, but because they have no system for keeping track of it.

A simple routine to start with

  • One place for every assignment, either a planner or a phone calendar.
  • A set homework time and a quiet spot, most days of the week.
  • Big projects broken into small steps with their own dates.
  • A quick check each Sunday of what is coming up that week.
  • Short breaks: 25 minutes of focus, then 5 minutes off.

Your role is to help set up the system and check in, not to do the work. Over time, hand more of the planning to your child.

A mentor can help with organization, focus and motivation, while a tutor can help with the subjects that feel hardest.
